Patriots’ Demarcus Covington is the ‘strong favorite’ to become defensive coordinator
The New England Patriots may promote from within for their vacant defensive coordinator job.
Defensive line coach Demarcus Covington “right now, is a strong favorite” to get promoted into the coordinator role according, to Albert Breer of MMQB.
Covington brings seven years of coaching experience. All of them have been with the Patriots. He started as a coaching assistant and then took on the role of the outside linebacker coach.
Covington moved to his current defensive line job in 2020. Since 2019, he has worked alongside new head coach Jerod Mayo.
The 34-year old is a name that is rising in the eyes of the NFL. Covington received interviews for the defensive coordinator jobs with the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers last offseason.
Even in the scenario where Covington gets the promotion, there could be other candidates still added to the staff.
“The Patriots could also seek Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Christian Parker or Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander, both of whom interviewed for the coordinator job, to the defensive staff with Covington.” Breer reported on Tuesday.
The Boston Herald spoke with current Patriot defensive players on Covington and got positive feedback. Players included Patriots team captain, Deatrich Wise Jr.
“He has a great understanding of the entire defense and scheme. He can coach defensive line, linebackers and defensive backs. He sees the big picture, he’s a good players coach and can control the room,” Wise said.
