Patriots set to interview former assistant Nick Caley for OC Job (report)
The New England Patriots are set to interview Nick Caley for their vacant offensive coordinator job on Monday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Caley was with the Patriots from 2015-22.
The 40-year old is the first known offensive coordinator interview for New England since Bill O’Brien left for Ohio State. Caley held the role of tight ends coach for the Patriots before taking the same position for the Los Angeles Rams two seasons ago.
Between his familiarity with the organization and his knowledge he presumably gained of the highly successful Sean McVay offense, this fit makes a lot of sense.
Tight ends coach, not only deals with the passing game, but tight ends are also involved in blocking especially during running plays. Getting involved with multiple facets of the McVay offense, Caley, could be a huge asset if New England is looking to implement any of the techniques in their gameplans.
Former safety Devin McCourty spoke with WEEI on what he was told by Caley when he was on a reporting assignment for NBC.
“I was talking to him (Caley) and he was like, he’s enjoying being down there… [and] he was like fundamentally, what McVay is teaching is the same thing that he was [teaching] in New England. You know, tough football. Smart players. All of that stuff. But it’s a different way of teaching it. And he said it’s been awesome for him to be in that now.”
As of now, it is unknown how much the Patriots will change their playbook. It could be a complete overhaul or more of small implementations. However, with a new head coach in Jerod Mayo, a 4-13 record, and a bottom of the league offense, changes are sure to be made.
