Dodgers not closing the door on reunion with former Red Sox utilityman
The Dodgers have done some heavy lifting this offseason, signing numerous big-name and key free agents. Their roster is stacked, and now the club appears to be ready to add depth to their bench ahead of the start of spring training.
Los Angeles is interested in bringing back former Red Sox utilityman Kiké Hernández. During the Dodgers annual fan fest over the weekend, fans began chanting, “Kiké!” in support of the versatile player, and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman assured fans that a potential reunion could be in the works.
“The door will never be closed on Kíké,” Friedman said to reporters. “Whatever the best decision is for Kiké and his wife, his family, they’ll figure it out. I’m biased, and hopefully it’s with us, but they’ve put themselves in a position to make a decision.”
The Yankees have also checked in on Hernández, and the Bronx could be a landing spot if the Dodgers elect to go in another direction to fill out their bench.
Hernández has spent the last two seasons in Los Angeles, winning the World Series with the Dodgers last season. Over the course of his career, he has played parts of eight seasons in Dodgers’ blue and white. He owns a career slash line of .240/.307/.416 in Los Angeles.
Last season, he played in 126 games, hitting .229 with 12 homers, 49 RBI, 16 doubles, 27 walks, and 83 wRC+ with a .654 OPS. While those numbers don’t jump off the page, Hernández has provided a flair for the dramatics in the postseason. In 86 career postseason games, he owns a .278 average with 15 homers, 35 RBI, seven doubles, two triples, and a .874 OPS. Hernández hit five home runs in 11 games during the Red Sox postseason run to the ALCS in 2021.
