What to watch for in the Red Sox Spring Breakout game
In less than a week, Red Sox fans will get a preview of what the future holds. The organization's top prospects will take center stage against the Braves in the Spring Breakout game. The Red Sox roster includes prospects who have been human highlight reels in the minors, such as Nick Yorke, Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel, Blaze Jordan, and Roman Anthony.
For many in the organization, including Anthony, it is an opportunity not being taken for granted.
“It should be fun,” Anthony told MLB.com’s Ian Browne.“It should be really fun. Any time we get to take the field together, it’s a fun time. We try to take the most of it. We’re looking forward to it. Luckily we’re home so we get to play right here in this stadium and in front of these fans. That’s always a blessing. It’s exciting. It’s going to be a fun day.”
While the Red Sox's top prospects are well known, there are also a few intriguing non-ranked prospects on the roster. That includes third baseman Isaac Coffey, pitchers Luis Guerrero and David Sandlin, and second baseman Kristian Campbell. Sandlin, who was acquired in the John Schreiber trade, will get to show why the Red Sox targeted him.
In that group, Guerrero is the closest to being major league-ready. Last season, he got a brief taste of Triple-A action, appearing in six games for Worcester. He posted a 7.71 ERA in 4.2 innings of work. Before his promotion, Guerrero had posted a 1.81 ERA in and struck out 59 batters in 43 games for Portland.
Although the Red Sox roster has plenty of talent, the Braves will also be exciting to watch. Their roster for the showcase includes pitchers such as Owen Murphy, Spencer Schwellenbach, and Patrick Halligan. Red Sox pitchers will also have to limit talented hitters such as Luis Guanipa, Nacho Alvarez Jr., and Diego Benitez.
This matchup will also include four prospects ranked among the top 100 in baseball. That group includes Cedddanne Rafaela, Mayer, Teel, and Anthony. The Braves and Red Sox will face off on March 16 at Fenway South at 1:05 pm.
