Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Dalton Rogers 'blessed' to take part in the Spring Breakout
Dalton Rogers completed his first full season in professional baseball in 2023. The former 99th overall pick in the 2022 amateur draft split time between High-A and Low-A in the Red Sox system.
Rogers came out of the gate sizzling for Low-A Salem posting a 2.49 WEA and 38 strikeouts over 21 2/3 innings. He was promoted to High-A Greenville, posting a 2.75 ERA over his first four outings with the Drive. Following his June 14 start where he struck out double-digit batters, he struggled the remainder of the season.
Following that impressive start, Rogers posted a 1-6 record with a 6.51 ERA over 55 1/3 frames. Overall, the left-hander posted a 2-7 record with a 4.84 ERA in 23 games. He surrendered 77 hits, 56 runs, 52 earned with 140 strikeouts to 61 walks.
The southpaw is an intriguing arm within the Red Sox system. He offers a three-pitch mix, a fastball that tops out at 96 mph, an above-average changeup that tops out at 83 mph and a slider that offers a sweeper-like break. He can struggle locating the pitch and it tops out at 82 mph.
This offseason, Rogers focused on refining his pitch mix and not focusing only on his fastball. He fined-tuned a newer pitch, a cutter, adding shape and velocity this winter. Rogers considers that his second best pitch within his arsenal.
Rogers, who turned 23 in January, is currently ranked No. 35 overall within the SoxProspects rankings. This past month, he was named as one of the prospects to represent the Red Sox during MLB’s Spring Breakout games this week.
“It’s obviously an honor to be a part of the first ever Spring Breakout game and being a part with a very talented group of guys,” said Rogers exclusively to Beyond the Monster. “Overall blessed to have the chance to showcase what I got on the field.”
Rogers being named to the roster is a milestone in his young professional career.
“I’m looking forward to having the chance to represent the name on the front and back of the jersey on the field. I am also looking forward to hanging out with guys and soaking up this opportunity as much as I can.”
Rogers projects as a left-handed reliever, per SoxProspects and offers a ceiling of a multi-inning bridge arm. “Fastball and changeup are intriguing, but improving his command and control and developing consistency with his secondary pitches are keys for him to reach his potential. Not overpowering so will have to locate,” per SoxProspects.
