Report: Red Sox do not plan to extend J.D. Martinez the $19.65M qualifying offer
The Boston Red Sox reportedly will not extend designated hitter J.D. Martinez a $19.65 million qualifying offer, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
MassLive’s Christopher Smith reported that Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said the club has not made any final decisions on qualifying offers.
Matt Barnes rediscovered himself in the second half and provided hope for 2023
Martinez saw his power numbers decline dramatically this past season. The 35-year-old hit just 16 homers, two of them came in the final game of the 2022 season.
The Florida native hit .274 with 146 hits, 43 doubles, one triple, 62 RBIs and a .790 OPS. Despite his numbers being down from what the club has been accustomed too, there’s still a possibility he can return to the team.
Martinez’ 42 doubles was tied for second with Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette and one behind the Guardians Jose Ramirez. The right handed slugger has 85 doubles over the last two seasons.
Kyle Schwarber known for hitting homers, wins fans tacos
Coming into the 2022 season, the Red Sox kept Martinez after he opted into his final year of his contract. There was speculation that Boston would have kept Kyle Schwarber and move Martinez.
Schwarber opted to sign with the Phillies and he is now in the World Series.
With the universal DH in effect, Martinez will have suitors for his services this winter. Based off his down year at the plate and nagging injuries, it’s unlikely he will receive an AVV similar to the qualifying offer.
Martinez has expressed that he enjoyed his time in Boston and would love to return. “The fans are the best,” said Martinez. “There’s never a dull day. It’s been fun, a cool experience. I’ve loved it.”
