Matt Barnes rediscovered himself in the second half and provided hope for 2023
For Matt Barnes, the last two years have been full of highs and lows. In 2021, he was named an All-Star for the first time in his career before struggling mightily in the second half. The 2022 campaign didn’t start any better as he battled injuries and had a 9.64 ERA in his first 20 appearances. However, he was a different pitcher down the stretch.

In his final 24 appearances, the former first-round pick posted a 1.59 ERA in 22.2 innings. He struck out 20 batters during that stretch and only allowed four earned runs. Barnes was able to limit hard contact and did not allow a home run. As the Red Sox fell out of playoff contention, he showed that he could still be a highly productive arm.

Additionally, Barnes was trusted in high-leverage situations and rewarded Alex Cora’s faith. The University of Connecticut product converted six of his seven save opportunities and added 19 holds to resume. He once again became a reliable option for the Red Sox.

While the 32-year-old finished the season with a 4.31 ERA, that does not tell the whole story. He was arguably the best reliever down the stretch in a bullpen that struggled all season. That provided hope that he could still offer value in 2023 as the veteran reliever prepares for a critical year in his career.
Next winter Barnes will be in unfamiliar territory. The Red Sox will have to choose between picking up his club option or letting the 2011 draftee test free agency. It seemed like a stretch just a few months ago that he would even make it to that point. If he can build on his strong finish to the 2022 campaign, the Red Sox decision on the option will become much easier.

Although Barnes was able to save his career in Boston, he will be relied on heavily next year. The Red Sox bullpen is expected to undergo many changes, and the margin for error will be smaller. A healthy and confident Barnes will be crucial to that group.
