Red Sox trade Chase Shugart to the Pirates, acquire right-handed minor league pitcher
The Red Sox and Pirates have become trading partners of late, completing their third deal since the summer.
Boston traded right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart to Pittsburgh for minor league right-hander Matt McShane, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray. Shugart was designated for assignment on Wednesday to make room on the 40-man roster for new catcher Blake Sabol.
Shugart, 28, made his big league debut with the Sox this summer, yielding four runs on eight hits and three walks with eight strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings of relief. He spent the bulk of the 2024 season in Triple-A Worcester, where he logged a 4.46 ERA.
The Sox and Pirates have been wheelin’ and dealin’ with each other a lot since their first trade back in July. Boston acquired starter Quinn Priester in exchange for Nick Yorke. Last month, the Red Sox traded infielder Enmanuel Valdez for minor league reliever Joe Vogatsky.
McShane, 22, was selected by the Pirates in the 13th round (384th overall) during last summer’s amateur draft out of St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia. He signed with the Pirates for $150,000 but did not pitch following being drafted.
Over the course of his collegiate career, McShane has recorded a 3.76 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 53 total appearances (two starts) over 119 2/3 innings at St. Joseph’s. The 6-foot-4 and 220-pound righty has a 93-95 mph fastball that has topped out at 96 mph. He also offers an 82-83 mph slider and an 86-87 mph changeup, per ProspectsLive.
McShane and Vogatsky were both members of the 2024 draft class and offer Boston two more young pitchers to put into their pipeline at the lower levels of their system.
McShane is expected to begin the season at Low-A Salem and pitch out of the bullpen, according to SoxProspects.
