Red Sox sign right-handed pitcher from 2020 team to minor league deal (report)
The Red Sox are bringing back a member of their 2020 bullpen. Boston has agreed to a minor league deal with hard-throwing righty Robert Stock, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. The deal also includes an invite to spring training.
Stock pitched in 10 games for the Red Sox during the 2020 COVID-shortened season. The 35-year-old has made 55 appearances with four organizations since he made his big league debut in 2018. While he was with the Red Sox, he recorded a 4.73 ERA, allowing nine runs off 16 hits over 13 1/3 innings. He also struck out 14 batters while walking 10 over that span.
Boston initially acquired Stock when he was claimed off waivers from the Phillies on July 26, 2020.
The University of Southern California product pitched in Mexico and dominated as a starter in winter ball, posting a 1.60 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 84 1/3 frames. Stock became the first Naranjeros pitcher to win the Triple Crown, leading the league in wins (10), ERA (1.60), and strikeouts (78).
While pitching over the summer in Mexico, he made 19 starts for Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos and posted a 3.38 ERA.
Stock last pitched in the big leagues back in 2021 for the Mets, pitching in three games with a 0-2 record and owning an 8.00 ERA. That season, his fastball velocity was ranked in the 87th percentile according to Baseball Savant, topping out at 96.2 mph. He offers a five-pitch mix on the mound: a four-seam fastball, a cutter, a changeup, a slider, and a curveball.
He will join Isaiah Campbell, Michael Fulmer, Bryan Mata, Wyatt Mills, and Austin Adams on minor league deals with invites to spring training.
