Red Sox add intriguing pitching prospect in Enmanuel Valdez trade
On Sunday, the Red Sox added some pitching depth to the minors in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Red Sox traded INF/OF Enmanuel Valdez, who had been designated for assignment to the Pirates for RHP Joe Vogatsky. While Vogatsky has yet to make his professional debut, he could become an interesting arm for the Red Sox.
In the 2024 MLB Draft, the Pirates selected Vogatsky in the 19th round. After starting his college career in the rotation, he spent the last two years in the bullpen, where he posted a 3.43 ERA in 48 appearances. He also got some closing opportunities, recording 14 saves, tied for the most in program history. Regardless of the situation, he was a pitcher that James Madison could rely on.

With Vogatsky, the Red Sox are adding a pitcher who has frustrated hitters with a unique pitch mix. His arsenal includes a fastball that averages 93 miles per hour and tops out at 97. The 6-foot, 215-pound right-hander also has a slider with solid spin rates and a modest break to mix with a changeup that tops out in the mid-80s. He creates some deception with his sidearm delivery.
Although the Virginia native is unproven, Valdez had no path to playing time in Boston. He was streaky at the plate last year and had his fair share of struggles defensively. The Red Sox also have highly regarded prospects such as Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, who could be in the majors at some point during the 2025 season. That made him expendable and valuable for a Pirates team looking to add more power to its lineup.
Over the next few weeks, the Red Sox are expected to be busy improving their roster. Adding more pitchers like Vogatsky with upside will be a key part of that equation. When Vogatsky finally makes his professional debut, he could be a pleasant surprise.
