Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony on last season: 'Just show up play baseball every day, and just try to learn as much as I can'
Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony skyrocketed through the system this past season. The 19-year-old played for Low-A Salem, High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland in 2023.
His time with Greenville was impactful, mashing .294 with 60 hits, 12 homers, 14 doubles, three triples and a .981 OPS. Those numbers earned him a promotion to the Sea Dogs.
Anthony attributes his success in his first full professional season to learning from the coaches and players around him.
“Yeah, it went really well. You know, going into it, obviously, being that it was gonna be my first full year. You know, I've said it before, I just tried to go into the year and take away as much, you know, knowledge that I could, from, you know, the guys around me, the coordinators around me, and just people who have a lot more experienced than I do,” said Anthony on the “To the Show We Go” podcast.
“You know, heading into my first spring training, I didn't really know what to expect, went in there and, really learned a lot being in spring training, and going from spring training, then go into an affiliate, for the first for the first time, you know, for a full year.
“I didn't really set any expectations on myself, didn't say I had to be somewhere, I had to make Double-A, I had to I had to go to Greenville. To me, it was just, show up play baseball every day, and just trying to learn as much as I can from the people that come in and out and from my teammates,” added Anthony.
The second-round pick has been public on not setting expectations for himself. Anthony is focused on playing baseball and letting the results speak for themselves.
“I think when you don't set any expectations on yourself, like I did, you can end up wherever it takes you. So for me, it was just the same goal every day to just gonna show up and play baseball and learn as much as I can. Whether that be in Low-A or Double-A, and it worked out well. I thought I had a really, really good year. In the end, I took a lot away from this year that I had, now I'm really prepared going into next year, I feel like,” said Anthony.
The Florida native will work on developing more physically and getting faster and stronger this winter. Anthony knows he’s not a finished product and there’s more to build off of as he gets older and grows in the Sox’ system.
“I’ve learned a ton, I’ve been to three different levels now and experienced my first spring training so it’s been an awesome year,” Anthony said. “It’s definitely something I’ll look back on when its the offseason and be like wow, it’s definitely a special year but there’s a lot of work to be done.”
