Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony joins "To the Show We Go" podcast, talks about his success during the 2023 season
Anthony: 'Heading into my first spring training, I didn't really know what to expect, went in there, really learned a lot'
Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony rose through the system last season, swinging a hot bat and playing great defense. The 19-year-old started the season in Low-A, hit the cover off the ball and ended the campaign with the Portland Sea Dogs.
Anthony was a guest on the “To the Show We Go” podcast and he talked about his exciting season and not setting expectations for himself. He talked about really trying to learn from people every step of the way through the Red Sox organization.
“You know, heading into my first spring training, I didn't really know what to expect, went in there and, really learned a lot being in spring training, and going from spring training, then go into an affiliate, for the first for the first time, you know, for a full year. I didn't really set any expectations on myself, didn't say I had to be somewhere, I had to make Double-A, I had to I had to go to Greenville. To me, it was just, you know, show up play baseball every day, and just trying to learn as much as I can from the people that come in and out and from my teammates,” said Anthony.
Roman Anthony is focused on working to become better defensively, faster and stronger
Anthony displayed his power and offensive approach, batting .272 with 27 doubles, four triples, 14 homers, 64 RBIs, 16 stolen bases with an .869 OPS.
While the 19-year-old is very proud of his offensive numbers, his defensive approach is just as important to him.
“A lot of people obviously, they look at the hitting side more than they do the defensive side,” said Anthony of the To the Show We Go Podcast. “I think that's just how it is in baseball now. But for me, going into the year, defense was just as important to me and going into spring training, I was trying to learn as much as I can.”

Roman Anthony talks about playing with Kyle Teel this past season: ‘I think he makes a lot of people better'
Anthony had the opportunity to play with top Red Sox catching prospect Kyle Teel after he was drafted. The Florida native talked about how Teel made everyone around him better on and off the baseball field.
“Yeah, he's awesome. He's the man, he's actually down here (Fort Myers) as well,” said Anthony. “He was just over not too long ago. He's, he's, he's a great dude. He I've learned a lot from him. Just in the short time being with him. You know, the minute he got to Greenville he was like a spark plug. He's a high energy guy. You know, college guy so he knows a lot it's got a lot of knowledge but he's just can flat out play baseball. He's just a very good baseball player.
“He's a baseball rat you know, he's a very good athlete for catcher runs well, can steal bases more than people probably think. He can really hit for average, he's just a pure hitter to all fields and you know the catching is ridiculous… the arms ridiculous.
