Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas discusses being part of trade rumors
As the Red Sox have looked for ways to improve their roster this offseason, Triston Casas has been a popular name in trade rumors. However, with a month left until the start of spring training, it is likely that Casas will find himself in the middle of the Red Sox's batting order.
While the last few months have caused plenty of uncertainty for Casas, he hasn't let himself get caught up in the trade talk.
“I try not to get too caught up in it,” Casas told MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “I feel like this is part of the business of baseball. Checking in on players, seeing what kind of value you could get back. And you never know what kind of haul you could get for a player, or how much another organization values somebody. So it might be in the best interest to move myself or anybody, really, if there's a good enough package.”
Since making his MLB debut, Casas' career has been full of ups and downs. In 2023, he finished third in the AL Rookie of the Year Voting after driving in 65 runs in 132 games. He seemed poised for a big sophomore season last year before suffering a torn cartilage in his right rib in April that caused him to miss four months. When he returned to action, the 24-year-old could not replicate his success.
While last season was full of frustration, Casas is now ready to bounce back. If he can recapture his rookie form, the Red Sox will have a lethal bat in the middle of the order. Casas hopes to fill that role for the Red Sox for years to come.
"I love Boston," Casas told Browne. "I love everything about it, and they've welcomed me with open arms since my first professional day. So it'd be great to play here as long as possible. I love the fans, and they've welcomed me generously all the time. So I would love to play the rest of my career here, but if it's elsewhere, I just feel like [Opening Day], no matter where it's at, I'm going to be playing a Major League game. So just focus on that."
Although a lot can change for Casas come Opening Day, his focus is on staying healthy and providing a reminder of how valuable he is.
