Red Sox one of eight teams in attendance for future Hall of Famer pro day
Max Scherzer wants to pitch in 2025, and the 40-year-old recently held a throwing session in front of numerous teams, including the Red Sox.
At least eight clubs that attended Scherzer’s pro day at Cressey Sports Performance in Florida earlier this week, according to Pat Ragazzo of SI.com.
In addition to Boston, the other teams in attendance were the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Cubs.
The last two years have plagued the future Hall of Famer with a variety of injuries. Scherzer has logged only 88.1 innings since the Mets traded him to the Rangers back in 2023. He was held to just nine appearances in 2024 due to back, shoulder, and hamstring issues.
The three-time Cy Young winner’s health and durability are a concern for any team signing him for the upcoming season. Whether the Red Sox are serious about signing Scherzer or they're just doing their due diligence, kicking the tires on the veteran makes sense, but it’s hard to think if he’ll be relied upon for 30 or more starts.
With the rotational depth chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has created, there isn’t a true need for Scherzer in the Red Sox rotation, and it’s unknown whether he’s willing to pitch out of the bullpen to extend his career a little longer.
Scherzer has a career 216-112 record, with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.078 WHIP in 466 MLB games. He is just 122 innings shy of 2,000 innings after throwing just 43 1/3 last year.
Boston has already added Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval this offseason. They’ve made other smaller minor moves to fill out their depth at the upper levels of the system.
