Red Sox re-sign veteran catcher who was with Worcester in ‘24
The Red Sox re-signed catcher Mark Kolozsvary to a minor-league deal, per ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel. The deal will also include an invitation to spring training.
Kolozsvary spent last season in the Red Sox system, assigned to Triple-A Worcester. The veteran backstop played in 27 games for the WooSox, where he hit .185 with three homers, two doubles, 10 RBI, two stolen bases, and a .703 OPS.
He was placed on the development list seven separate times.
Defensively, Kolozsvary allowed just one passed ball and threw out six of 33 potential base stealers.
The 29-year-old saw limited playing time but had a positive impact on the WooSox pitching staff and coaches with his strong defensive background and ability to work with the pitchers.
Kolozsvary played for the University of Florida, where he helped the Gators win the 2017 College World Series. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2017; he made his major league debut with the Reds in 2022, going 4-for-20 (.200) with two doubles, one home run, three RBIs, three runs scored, one walk, and nine strikeouts.
Last season, Kolozsvary was one of four players who played in the Olympics that was on the WooSox roster; he was joined by Triston Casas, Jamie Westbrook, and Eddy Alvarez. They claimed a silver metal for Team USA while playing in Toyko.
Kolozsvary won’t break camp with Boston; he’ll wind up back in Worcester. The Red Sox have Seby Zavala, Blake Sabol, Nathan Hickey, and Kolozsvary at Triple-A, all with the ability to offer depth at the big league level.
