Red Sox sign Staten Island FerryHawks outfielder to minor-league deal
The Red Sox are working to finalize a deal with outfielder Kolby Johnson to a minor contract, according to Blogging the Red Sox writer Brendan Campbell. Johnson posted on his Instagram that he has signed with the Red Sox.
Johnson, 25, spent the 2024 season with the Staten Island FerryHawks of the independent Atlantic League. In 112 games, the right-handed hitter batted .308/.380/.459 with 24 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 62 RBIs, 93 runs scored, 32 stolen bases, 32 walks, and 83 strikeouts over 489 plate appearances.
The 5-foot-6, 165-pounder spent most of his time playing right field for the FerryHawks, where he committed just two errors in 214 chances. Johnson had 11 outfield assists, which were the second-most in the league.
The 25-year-old played collegiately at Central Arkansas from 2019-23 before going undrafted in 2023. Johnson joined the FerryHawks after a successful season playing for MLB Draft League’s Trenton Thunder in 2023. He slashed .361/.450/.578 in 40 games.
It’s not known yet which Red Sox affiliate Johnson will be assigned to by the organization.
