Red Sox' No. 22 ranked prospect name floated in Nolan Arenado trade talks (report)
The Red Sox and Cardinals have been engaged in trade talks that could potentially send third baseman Nolan Arenado to Boston.
One player’s name that could reportedly could go back to the Cardinals in the trade is infielder Blaze Jordan.
“One player the Cardinals have discussed as a potential return for Arenado, per a source, is slugging first baseman Blaze Jordan, the No. 22 prospect in the Red Sox's system,” MLB.com’s Cardinals’ reporter John Denton wrote. “Cardinals front-office advisor Chaim Bloom, who has been named the club’s president of baseball operations in 2026 upon the retirement of John Mozeliak, was the chief baseball officer for Boston from 2020 to 2023, and he has a vast knowledge of the Red Sox’s farm system.”
Jordan was one of the Red Sox prospects who was snubbed from getting a non-roster invite to spring training next week. The 22-year-old had an unlucky 2024 campaign, landing on the injured list twice, once with a broken finger and a second time after getting hit in the face with a fastball.
In total, Jordan played in 89 games for the Portland Sea Dogs. Hitting .261 with seven homers, 22 doubles, one triple, 61 RBI, two stolen bases, and a .693 OPS.
The Red Sox potentially including Jordan in an Arenado trade makes sense due to the infielder depth the organization has heading into 2025. With Triston Casas and Rafael Devers seemingly locked up on the corner infield positions for Boston, Jordan’s path to the big leagues is blocked unless he plays in the outfield or gets time at designated hitter.
For the Cardinals, they have potential top infield prospects in JJ Wetherholt, Thomas Saggese, César Prieto, Jonathan Mejia, and Yairo Padilla. Adding Jordan to the mix would give the rebuilding Cardinals a potential young and controllable power hitter in their system.
If Jordan isn’t moved, he should start the year with the Portland Sea Dogs, but a strong start in Double-A could propel him to Triple-A Worcester quickly. The WooSox currently lack a true first baseman on their roster. New catcher Blake Sabol is expected to get reps at the position; Alex Binelas and Nathan Hickey are other options for the WooSox.
