Greg Weissert ready to build on strong 2024 campaign
During the 2024 campaign, the Red Sox bullpen saw a lot of change. That was partly due to injuries and poor performances. However, one player who emerged as a useful piece was Greg Weissert. After arriving in Boston in the Alex Verdugo trade, the New York native became a workhorse.
In 62 games, the former 18th-round pick posted a 3.13 ERA while striking out 58 batters. He also added six holds to his resume and recorded one save. After entering the season with 29 appearances in the majors, he more than doubled that total while making a good first impression.
Although Weissert took on an increased workload, he got better as the season went on. His best stretch came from August 20 to September 28, when he did not allow an earned runs in 17 straight outings. The Fordham alum did not surrender an earned run in 49 of his 62 appearances all season. Due to his play, Weissert became one of Alex Cora’s most trusted arms.Â
With the 2025 season only weeks away, Weissert finds himself in a different place than a year ago. Unlike last year, he is not fighting for a roster spot. He has proven he can be an effective player and thrive in a demanding market. In a bullpen that has undergone a lot of change, Weissert could be a valuable piece.Â
As the talented 30-year-old looks to build on his success, he will have to limit hard contact. Last season, he allowed seven home runs and 65 hits. If he can get those numbers down, Weissert will once again hear his name called often.
When the Red Sox begin the 2025 campaign, Weissert should have the same role as last year. As long as he continues to be a reliable arm, the Red Sox bullpen will be in good hands.
