Red Sox top prospect offers opinion on prospect rankings
The Red Sox own the best farm system in baseball for the first time ever, according to Baseball America.
Boston’s farm system is led by No. 2 prospect Roman Anthony, No. 4 Kristian Campbell, and No. 15 Marcelo Mayer to round out the top 20.
“The Red Sox have returned to the top of the farm system rankings, even after dealing four prospects to the White Sox to bring Garrett Crochet to Boston,” BA wrote. “No other organization can match the trio of Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer, and Boston’s pitching depth has improved as well.”
Anthony isn’t necessarily fazed by the hype of publications top prospect rankings.
“None of it really matters,” said Anthony on the Diggin’ Deep podcast. “I haven’t had an at-bat in the big leagues yet, and the ultimate goal is not to just be the #1 prospect. It’s to be a big leaguer for a long time… and to help the Red Sox win.”
This is the second time a top prospect in the Red Sox system has voiced his opinion about the rankings.
“I think everyone here sees the prospect rankings, but to be honest, I don’t really give a shit about the rankings,” Mayer said to Beyond the Monster last July. “The biggest thing for me is getting to the big leagues. When you are a big leaguer, nobody cares about what your ranking was when you were in the minor leagues. I don’t really focus on it, but it is an honor to be ranked that high, but it’s not something I put much thought into.”
Anthony, 20, was given a non-roster invite to spring training last week along with Campbell and Mayer. He put together a strong season with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, where he slashed .291/.396/.498 with 18 homers. The top outfield prospect played in 35 games for the WooSox, hit .344 and has the potential to make the Opening Day roster.
