Red Sox designate infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment, add Garrett Cooper to the 26-man roster
The Red Sox made a surprising roster move Monday morning.
The club designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment to make room for newly acquired Garett Cooper on the 26-man roster.
Reyes is the first of at least two moves the club will need to make ahead of the series opener on Tuesday night against the Giants.
Rehabbing infielder Vaughn Grissom is expected to join the team, and another roster move will be required. The logical candidates to be optioned back to Worcester to make room for him are either Bobby Dalbec, David Hamilton, or Enmanuel Valdez.
Grissom is coming off a huge potential final game with the WooSox on Sunday, where he went 4-for-4 with four singles.
The 30-year-old Reyes has struggled offensively this season, batting .183 with two doubles, four runs, five RBI, three walks, and a .451 OPS. He hit .287 in 64 games last season after coming over from the Athletics.
Reyes’ versatility in the field offered value to the roster; he made nine starts at third base, four starts at second base, one start at first base, and one start at shortstop this season. He made four errors at third base while filling in for Rafael Devers.
Cooper comes to the Red Sox following a trade with the Cubs on Saturday. The veteran first baseman was designated for assignment by the Cubs last week after playing 12 games in the Windy City. In his short stint with Chicago, Cooper batted .270 with one double, one triple, one homer, and six RBIs with a .774 OPS.
With Triston Casas down for the foreseeable future, Cooper provides the Red Sox with a legitimate first-baseman option. The club has been rotating Reyes, Bobby Dalbec, and Connor Wong at the position.
