So far this season, the Red Sox bullpen has undergone numerous changes. One player included in that shuffle is Brennan Bernadino, who began the season in Triple-A. Since being recalled to the majors on April 9, the 32-year-old has been one of the Red Sox’s best relievers.
Through 10.2 innings of work, Bernardino has posted an 0.84 ERA and recorded one hold. The veteran left-hander has been virtually unhittable and has struck out 11 batters. Like last year, he has been a valuable piece regardless of the situation.
One thing that has made Bernardino so valuable is his ability to excel in the opener role. That was on display on April 18th against the Cleveland Guardians. The Red Sox reliever was tasked with limiting one of the best teams in baseball and did not allow a hit in two innings. It also marked Bernadino's fourth scoreless outing of the season.
Additionally, the California native has done a great job of limiting base runners. So far this season, opponents are hitting .121 against him. That is over 100 points lower than last season when Bernardino burst onto the scene after the Red Sox claimed him off waivers. In his second stint, he has only built on his success.
While Bernadino has only a small sample size, he has quietly been a dominant reliever since putting on a Red Sox uniform. Dating back to last season, Bernardino has posted a 2.79 ERA in his last 63 games. That is an impressive stretch, and he has shown no signs of slowing down.
As the Red Sox look to build on their impressive start, a reliable bullpen will be critical. So far, Bernardino has been an essential part of their success, and that should only continue.
