Red Sox 'Big 3' highlight Spring Breakout roster
The Red Sox will feature their top prospects in the organization on Saturday afternoon when they play in the Spring Breakout game against the Braves.
The big three in Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel are penciled into the lineup and will hit 1-3 to open the game.
Anthony will lead off and play right field for the Red Sox and will have an opportunity to showcase his array of skills offensively and defensively.
“It should be fun,” said Anthony to reporters leading up to the Spring Breakout game. “It should be really fun. Any time we get to take the field together, it’s a fun time. We try to take the most of it. We’re looking forward to it. Luckily we’re home so we get to play right here in this stadium and in front of these fans. That’s always a blessing. It’s exciting. It’s going to be a fun day.”
Anthony is ranked as the club’s No. 1 prospect on SoxProspects, leap-frogging Mayer who dealt with a shoulder injury last season after struggling in Double-A Portland.
Mayer who is healthy, will bat second and play shortstop. The 21-year-old saw his first spring action on Monday against the Pirates. He replaced infielder Eddy Alvarez in the lineup and quickly turned a double play in the game. The Calif. native showed off his beautiful swing, crushing a double in the home half of the seventh.
Teel starts behind the plate and will bat third in the lineup. The young catcher’s bat helped propel him to Double-A Portland quickly after being drafted last year.
Red Sox game planning coordinator Jason Varitek has not had much time to work in person with Teel, however, he has liked what he has seen from a distance in the young catcher.
“We haven’t seen him much here,” Varitek told NESN’s Tom Caron on Friday night. “From the bits that I have, he’s a very good athlete. He does a lot of things well. Most of my vision with him has been on video here and there.”
