Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo requests to interview potential new special teams coach
New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo is busy working at building a new coaching staff.
After being announced as Patriots head coach last week, Mayo has requested to interview Falcons special teams coach Marquice Williams, per the NFL Network.
The New York Giants requested to interview Williams, but that request was denied by the Falcons. Atlanta is looking for a new head coach and reportedly interviewed Bill Belichick for the role on Monday night.
The 38-year-old has been the Falcons special teams coordinator since 2021 has a few Patriots connections. In 2019, Matt Patricia hired Williams to be his assistant special teams coach with the Lions. He would leave his role in 2021 and joined Arthur Smith’s staff in Atlanta.
Last year, the Patriots had three experienced special teams coaches working with the unit – Joe Judge, Cam Achord, and Joe Houston. The Patriots special teams unit has been inconsistent over the last few seasons.
Future Hall of Famer Matthew Slater is retiring following the Patriots 4-13 season, rookie kicker Chad Ryland struggled, while punter Bryce Baringer was strong.
