Bill O’Brien out as offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots (report)
Bill O’Brien will not be back with the New England Patriots. The offensive coordinator will take the same role with Ohio State, per ESPN’s College Football senior write Pete Thamel.
O’Brien took over for Matt Patricia in hopes to fix the offense last season. Unfortunately, his arrival didn’t help New England at all. New England scored just 13.9 points per game (last in the NFL) gained just 276.2 yards per game (30th in the NFL.
Not only will there be a new head coach in Jerod Mayo, the Patriots will now be searching for their fourth offensive coordinator in four years.
With a new era set to begin in Foxboro, Mayo has a chance to bring in a brand new coaching staff. A new staff that could include a different offensive scheme then what New England has been running under longtime former head coach Bill Belichick.
It is unknown how the departure of O’Brien went down. Mayo suggested in his introductory press conference that there’d be changes on the coaching staff.
“Everything’s still under consideration. The staff that I’ve been working with isn’t the staff that I chose.”
On the Patriots official website they have removed every coaches biography except for Mayo and it simply reads “The coaching staff or 2024 will be announced at a later time."
During his coaching career, O’Brien has worked with Bryce Young, Tom Brady and Deshaun Watson. Young won the Heisman Trophy under O’Brien while playing at Alabama.
O’Brien served as the head coach for Penn State before coming back to the NFL and becoming the Houston Texans head coach. He spent six seasons in Houston, leading them to four AFC South titles before being let go in 2020. After spending time with Alabama as an offensive coordinator he returned back to One Patriot Place.
The veteran coach is expected to have input on how the Buckeyes offense will be constructed. Brian Hartline, who held the title of OC, is expected to remain on Ryan Day’s staff. This is the second new hire for Ohio State’s 2024 coaching staff. The school hired Matt Guerrieri as safeties coach, replacing Perry Eliano.
