Patriots safety and team captain Jabrill Peppers maintained his innocence following his arrest over the weekend.
Peppers appeared in Quincy District Court on Monday after he was arrested on Saturday morning on several charges, including assault and battery, strangulation, and possession of cocaine. The Patriots safety pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned, and he declined to comment when he left the courthouse.
Peppers’ attorney, Mark Brofsky, did provide a statement on the situation involving his client.
“What I said in the courtroom, I’ll repeat: We have evidence that completely contradicts the alleged victim’s story. I expect my client to be fully exonerated,” Brofsky told reporters, per a video captured by Boston 25’s Ryan Breslin.
Brofsky also claimed that the Peppers' defensive team has video evidence and “other evidence as well.”
The news of Pepper's arrest broke early Monday morning, and reports stated the police responded to a call at a residential address about an altercation between two people. After the police conducted an investigation, Peppers was arrested and will reportedly be charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a “Class B” substance.
The Patriots released a statement regarding the Peppers situation and haven’t made any further comments.
“We are aware of the incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating. We will have no further comments at this time,” the team said.
Patriots head coach said on WEEI Monday morning that the team is still “gathering information,” but also added Peppers was still a member of the organization.
"I don't think anyone knows the facts or anything like that. It's a process," Mayo said.
In a conference call with the media, Mayo was asked if Peppers would be put on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list.
"We informed the NFL, and we're still gathering information. I know the team put out a statement earlier today," Mayo said. "I'm not sure how the league and how we are going to handle that going forward, but we should have some more information over the next few days."
Mayo was asked if Peppers would be allowed back with the team going forward.
"He's not in the building today; he has his court appearance. As we gather information, he can definitely be in the building. We don't know enough to say that he shouldn't be in the building," Mayo said.
