The Patriots might finally be making a change at quarterback following another inept offensive showing on Sunday afternoon in their 15-10 loss to the Dolphins at Gillette Stadium.
Rookie quarterback Drake Maye reportedly has a chance to make his first NFL start in the Patriots next game against the Texans.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday morning, “A QB change could soon be coming to New England, with rookie first-round pick Drake Maye potentially starting Sunday vs. the Texans.”
Current Patriots starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett went 18-of-34 for 160 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions in the game (a 65.8 passer rating). He did come close to throwing a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter when he connected with rookie receiver Ja’Lynn Polk in the back of the end zone. However, he was not able to keep his feet in bounds upon replay review.
Brissett is currently ranked as the 27th passer in the NFL at 77.0 and has only thrown two touchdown passes in five games with 536 yards (31st in the NFL).
On WEEI’s "The Greg Hill Show" Monday morning, head coach Jerod Mayo was asked if the team would make a quarterback change ahead of Sunday’s game.
“Look, we’re in the solution business, no matter who the players are in the locker room,” said Mayo when he was asked by WEEI’s Jermaine Wiggins about the Patriots’ struggles in the passing game. “Like, we as coaches have to come up with solutions. And I say it every week; every spot is going to be evaluated, and it still holds true today.”
Mayo was asked if the Patriots development plan of keeping Maye on the sidelines to develop under Brissett was still the best course of action for the team.
“Look, we’re gonna get better,” said Mayo. “And once again, I would say all positions are always being evaluated.”
The Patriots offense under coordinator Alex Van Pelt has been anemic, losing four straight games and averaging just 4.3 yards per offensive play.
Mayo was asked by reporters Monday morning during his media availability if he was considering making a change at offensive coordinator.
“That’s not under consideration,” Mayo answered.
With Van Pelt safe for now, the Patriots could turn to former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo to become their next offensive playcaller if the offense continues to look stagnant.
“We’re in a solution-driven business, and we aren’t playing good football,” Mayo said, “so we look at every single unit and every single player and figure out how we use this roster to go out and win games.”
