Patriots re-sign versatile offensive lineman Michael Onwenu
The Patriots are bringing back versatile offensive lineman Michael Onwenu, agreeing to a three-year, $57 million deal, including $38 million in guarantees, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Rapoport added that Onwenu will receive a $22.5 million signing bonus.
The 26-year-old was originally a sixth-round selection back in 2020. He earned himself regular playing time early on as a rookie and has been a starter ever since.
The 6-foot-3, 350 pounder will play a pivotal role in protecting new quarterback Jacoby Brissett who agreed to terms with the Patriots on Monday night.
Onwenu has shown his versatility since coming into the league playing both guard and tackle. He should remain on the outside, unless the team makes a splash in free agency.
Since being drafted, Onwenu has started 56 of 64 games in four years, he should continue to remain in the starting lineup health permitting.
This is the third reported re-signing for the Patriots, the team has also brought back wide Kendrick Bourne and tight end Hunter Henry.
