Bruins training camp is set to begin on Sept. 15, and the team and star goaltender Jeremy Swayman are still far apart on a new contract.
Speaking on his “32 Thoughts” podcast, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman noted that the recent four-year and $6.2 million AAV offer to Swayman “has not been disputed” to him. He believes that was one offer on the table for the goaltender.
According to Friedman, Swayman is looking for a significantly higher number from the team.
“I’ve also heard the McAvoy contract was the ask, which was [$9.5 million],” Friedman said. “So, it’s obvious there’s a huge discrepancy here.”
McAvoy received an eight-year pact from the Bruins; it appears that Swayman is looking for the massive payday and the years to go along with his new deal.
“I do believe at some point there was the eight-year deal on the table, but it was in the sixes,” Friedman said. “So, I don’t think at any point here, anyone’s ever been close.”
Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery believes that Swayman will be with the team when camp breaks in the coming days.
“Him and I had a great conversation about leading, becoming a leader as part of the Bruins,” Montgomery said in Maine at Bruins “Fan Fest." “I don’t have anything to do with the contract situation. That’s not part of my job detail. My job is my connection with the players and how we’re going to be good this year. And I have no doubt Jeremy Swayman will be a Bruin at the start of camp, and we’ll be ready to go.”
Bruins president emphasized that a deal with get done with Swayman back in mid-August.
“Something will get done. There’s no question,” Neely said Thursday during an appearance on WZLX’s “The Rich Shertenlieb Show." “I mean, not every negotiation is as smooth as you’d like it. I know our fan base would certainly love to have something done by now. But I’m fully confident that both sides will come to an agreement before too long here.”
Friedman also mentioned on his podcast that Neely and Swayman have met one-on-one recently, but nothing seems to have changed on either side regarding the negotiations.
