The Bruins were back on the ice this week, and captain Brad Marchand was available to the media as he embarks on his second season as the leader of the hockey club.
Boston held the first of two captains’ practices at Warrior Ice Arena, and Marchand was the first on the ice. The 36-year-old veteran enters the 2024-25 season on the final year of an eight-year contract he signed before the 2016-17 season.
With Bruins fans focused on the negotiations between the team and goaltender Jeremy Swayman, Marchand made his situation very clear to the media.
“I’m gonna say this now and kind of leave it at that; I won’t ever talk about contract stuff in the media,” Marchand said. “I saw a report the other day. I don’t know where he’s getting his information. It wasn’t from our side. We’re not gonna talk about it. Whatever goes on will stay internal between (Don Sweeney) and our group. I’ll leave it at that. I think there’s enough respect between the two sides that we can deal with it.”
Sweeney has stated in the past he would like to make Marchand a “lifelong Bruin.”
"Yeah, we're going to get to Brad. He's learning patience as a captain as well," Sweeney told reporters, per a Bruins transcript back in May. "So, he has to learn there's some ducks in a row in terms of adding to our group and how he wants to add to that, and those guys that don't have contracts up ahead, and eventually he’ll extend here. He’ll be a lifelong Bruin, that’s what we should do. But we'll check that box."
Based off the comments from Marchand and Sweeney’s from a few months ago, both sides are willing to get a deal done.
