The Boston Bruins have announced that they have signed 34-year old forward Tyler Johnson to a professional tryout. He will join Boston at training camp that starts in less than a month.
The two-time Stanley Cup champion (2020, 2021) appeared in 67 games with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2023-24 season, recording 17 goals and 14 assists for 31 points. In 738 career NHL games with Chicago and Tampa Bay he has experience at center and right wing.
The 5-foot-8, 185 lb veteran has totaled 193 goals and 238 assists for 431 points with a plus-20 rating. Johnson has also played 116 career Stanley Cup playoff games, tallying 32 goals and 33 assists for 65 points.
Last season, the Bruins brought in Danton Heinen on a professional tryout and he was put on the top two lines for the majority of the season. Heinen tallied 17 goals and 16 assists as a key contributor.
With the addition of center Elias Lindholm and the returns of the young forwards Matt Poitras and Justin Brazeau, it is unlikely Johnson will be playing in a top-six role when Boston is at full strength. Johnson joins new additions Max Jones, Mark Kastelic, and Vinni Lettieri who will be battling for ice time in training camp.
Shawn Hutcheon had reported that the Bruins have considered forwards Blake Wheeler and Kailer Yamamoto for professional tryouts. That was previously reported and it is unclear if they’d still be in play after Johnson joining.
