The Boston Red Sox list of candidates continue to reportedly grow. The new names to be enter in the mix are former Pirates general manager Neal Huntington, per Rob Bradford of WEEI and James Click, per Chad Jennings of the Athletic.
Jennings also reported that GM Sam Fuld of the Philadelphia Phillies and GM Brandon Gomes of the Los Angeles Dodgers have both declined to interview with Boston.
Huntington and Click are said to be in the mix, but there has been no reports of any scheduling or already having interviews with the Red Sox.
The only external candidate that is reportedly confirmed to be interviewing so far has been general manager Thad Levine of the Twins per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Jennings added that while Levine is “open” to the job, it’s no “slam dunk” the two sides will match.
Huntington has spent most of his time with the Pirates. During his time in Pittsburgh his clubs had mix results on the field. He was mostly known for being on the wrong sides of two big trades. He had traded away Gerrit Cole and then traded Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows for Chris Archer. In this previous season Huntington returned to baseball as a special assistant to the Cleveland Guardians.
Click would be an interesting candidate, but yet not surprising. As a general manager with the Houston Astros he won a World Series just last season.
He was offered a one year deal to return, but declined. He originally came into baseball with the Tampa Bay Rays and graduated from Yale, similar to Chaim Bloom. This season he served as the vice president of baseball strategy for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Other names could emerge as the days go on. After all the names that have come out today, it is becoming clear the search for the next front office leader is getting serious. Stay tuned to Beyond The Monster as names and the interviews progress.
