MLB Draft: Drew Gilbert a possibility to land with Red Sox
Drew Gilbert could get selected by the Sox
On Sunday the MLB Draft will take place and the Red Sox currently hold the 24th overall pick.
Back in May, Beyond the Monster took a dive into some potential draft selections.
One of them was Kumar Rocker, former Vanderbilt star who was selected by the Mets, but wasn’t signed and is now with the Tri-City Dust Devils.
Rocker wasn’t signed due to injury related issues that the Mets found, but while the Dust Devils he has appeared in five games and went 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA over 20 innings pitched and struck out 32 while walking only four and allowing only four runs, three of which were earned.
The other draft profile was Jordan Beck, teammate of Drew Gilbert.
Beck, who was high on the Sox list, has risen as far as being taken 20th overall and as far as 28th overall. The 20th pick is held by Atlanta Braves and the 28th pick is held by the Houston Astros.
According to MLB Pipeline, Gilbert ranks as the 32nd best overall draft prospect in this years draft and has a grade of 55 in the hit column with his power being 45.
This past season Gilbert hit a career-high 11 homers for the Vols and 70 RBIs in 199 at-bats. In this at-bats, Gilbert posted an .362 average, also a career-high.
Over his three-year stellar career with the Vols, Gilbert has appeared in 141 games, 134 of which he had started. He has 22 home runs and 140 RBIs and owns a career .314 average along with a career .985 fielding percentage. On the defensive side of things, he has only four errors over 254 putouts with six fielding assists.
Not only can Gilbert swing the bat and play above-average defense. He can also pitch.
However, don’t expect him to be a pitcher for a big league organization.
Gilbert did not pitch in 2022.
He does however own a 2-0 record over 16 innings (11 appearances) with 17 strikeouts and seven walks with a 2.76 ERA over his first two years pitching briefly for the Vols.
