Former Red Sox reliever an option to replace pitching coach Dave Bush?
The San Francisco Giants might be shaking things up with their coaching staff following the dismissal of Gabe Kapler. Current pitching coach and former Red Sox reliever Andrew Bailey’s status with the club is uncertain as he may leave the team to find a job on the east coast, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
“Bailey is extremely well regarded but his family is on the East Coast and he’s believed to want to work closer to home,” reported Slusser. “Bailey has been highly sought after around the majors, with multiple teams making inquiries, though there is the potential he could remain with San Francisco as the director of pitching or bench coach.”
Bailey, 39, has been the Giants pitching coach since 2020, prior to working for San Francisco, he worked as the Angels bullpen coach.
The former Red Sox reliever was drafted by the Athletics in the sixth round (188th overall) during the 2006 MLB draft. He was an American League All-Star in 2009 and 2010.
Boston acquired Bailey prior to the 2012 season along with outfielder Ryan Sweeney for outfielder Josh Reddick and two minor league players. Bailey’s time with the Red Sox was rocky, spending two seasons posting a 4.91 ERA with 14 saves. He was non-tendered by the club following the 2013 season.
Shoulder injuries derailed Bailey’s career and once his playing days were over, he transitioned to a role he was comfortable in, a mentor.
The Red Sox are looking to replace Dave Bush after firing him in early October. Bush had been the Red Sox pitching coach the last four seasons after joining the major league staff in Oct. 2019.
Boston’s pitching staff struggled in 2023, ranking 21st in team ERA (4.52), 24th in opponent batting average (.256) and 24th in homers allowed. Boston elected to move on from Bush due to the staff’s poor performance this past season, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
The Giants still haven’t announced Bailey’s status but there’s a strong possibility if he leaves for a team on the east coast, the team will replace him with former big league right-hander Ryan Vogelsong.
