NL West team has permission to interview Jason Varitek for managerial opening
San Francisco is searching for their next manager
The San Francisco Giants are searching for their next manager, after firing former Red Sox outfielder Gabe Kapler after four seasons.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that the Giants have been granted permission from Boston to interview Jason Varitek for their opening.
The former Red Sox catcher had an outstanding big league career highlighted by catching an MLB record four no hitters and winning two World Series. After re-signing in Boston in 2005, he was given the title as captain until his retirement after 2011 season.
Over the last three season Varitek has been in the dugout as the game planning coordinator. He also signed a 3 year extension in November of 2022, which is why the Giants needed the Red Sox permission to talk to him. While it would have been unlikely for the Red Sox to deny Varitek at an attempt to advance his career, Varitek’s desire to move away from Boston is unknown at this time.
Back in 2015 the Seattle Mariners actually offered Varitek the job to become their next manager and he turned it down. Since Varitek would be taking over for his former teammate in Kapler, one would imagine he will have a conversation with him to get the scoop on how the Giants operate.
Kapler has reportedly interviewed for the Red Sox front office lead role, but is interested in other roles including on field staff. When all is said and done it is possible Varitek and Kapler both are in Boston as teammates once again.
