The Red Sox made a series of coaching changes on Monday firing pitching coach Dave Bush and third base coach Carlos Febles, per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
Bush had been the Red Sox pitching coach the last four seasons after joining the major league staff in Oct. 2019.
Boston’s pitching staff struggled in 2023, ranking 21st in team ERA (4.52), 24th in opponent batting average (.256) and 24th in homers allowed.
Boston elected to move on from Bush due to the staff’s poor performance this past season, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
The 43-year-old joined the Red Sox organization as an analyst in 2016 before joining Cora’s staff. Bush served under Rob Roenicke during the pandemic shortened season and Cora.
During last week’s year end presser, Cora issued a statement that he was going to challenge his coaching staff to be better in 2024 but didn’t think changes on his staff were needed.
“I don’t believe so,” Cora said when asked if he thought a shakeup was needed. “I think we just have to be better, in a sense. We have to be willing to go and talk to people and adjust our routines. That’s something that we’ve been talking about the whole season. I know people talk about the coaching stuff and everything but the people that followed us the whole time saw that we did a lot of things that we don’t usually do. It didn’t work but it’s not lack of trying. It’s not lack of effort. It’s not lack of knowledge. It’s just that you’ve gotta keep trying to find ways for these guys to be better.”
The Red Sox finished 78-84 and in last place this past season. The current front office group must have felt that changes were needed on Cora’s coaching staff ahead of next year.
“Us as the coaching staff, we’ve gotta get better,” Cora said a week ago. “Push these guys to be a lot better and it’s on us to do this in the offseason, do that in spring training and do it throughout the season next year. That’s my challenge this year. Me and the coaches. We have to be better.”
