Adalberto Mondesí likely to miss rest of the season (report)
The Red Sox will likely never see infielder Adalberto Mondesí play for the team, after he was acquired in a trade from the Royals back in January.
Mondesí who has been rehabbing his left knee, following ACL surgery last season, has been shut down from baseball activities since August. He is now likely to not play at all this season, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
“It has been on and off. He started, again, his baseball activities. He didn’t feel so well so we had to shut it down,” Alex Cora said in mid-August. “He’s just getting treatment. It has been that battle, how he feels and where he’s at. We’ve done everything possible to get him right. He has done everything possible to get it right. It’s just a matter of jumping that last hurdle and we haven’t been able to do that.
“For us and for him, it has been frustrating because we’ve done everything possible and we’re still doing everything possible to get him back. We’re running out of time. But it’s not lack of effort. From his end and our end, I’ll tell you, we’ve done everything. We’ll see what happens.”
Mondesí suffered numerous setbacks this season, resulting in the speedy infielder to remain rehabbing in Fort Myers the whole season.
The 28-year-old is making $3.05 million this season and will become a free agent at the conclusion of the season. Injuries have always been a problem for the talented Mondesí. He has been limited to just 358 games since making his major league debut during the 2015 World Series.
The Sox acquired Mondesí and minor league infielder Angel Pierre in exchange for left-handed reliever Josh Taylor.
The southpaw underwent surgery last week to repair a herniated disc in his lower back back in July, effectively ending his season. Taylor had struggled pitching to an 8.15 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 17 appearances for the Royals before being placed on the injured list in late May.
Pierre hit .239 in 92 at-bats with nine RBI and eight stolen bases in his first season in the organization, all for the FCL Red Sox.
