Portland reliever Christopher Troye putting up impressive strikeout numbers in 2023
If you aren’t following Portland Sea Dogs reliever Christopher Troye on social media, you are missing out.
While his social media game is A+, his 2023 season has been going the same exact way on the mound.
After being selected in the 12th round of the 2021 Draft and spending all of 2022 in Salem, Troye started the 2023 season in High-A Greenville and put up dominant numbers. Over the 18.1 innings pitched in Greenville, the right-hander put up a 1.96 ERA in his 14 appearances. The most impressive part of his time in High-A this season were the strikeout numbers. Troye posted a 18.2 K/9 while in Greenville, which is the highest mark that number has been in his entire career. While it might be a smaller sample size, it is still impressive to say the least.
After receiving a promotion to Double-A at the start of June, Troye struggled out of the gate. He allowed 6 earned runs in his first 2.1 innings pitched. He would then go 8 straight outings of not giving up an earned run and has been consistent ever since.
The California native has continued his bat-missing ways with a 14.9 K/9 so far in Portland. To go alongside the strikeouts, opponents are only hitting .191 off Troye this season between High-A and Double-A. He has yet to give up a home run over his 27 innings pitched in Double-A. Dating back to 2021 when he was drafted, Troye has only given up 3 home runs in his entire Red Sox tenure, which is over 80 innings of work.
If Troye can finish off the final month of the season pitching the way he has this year, it won’t be a surprise to see his name on the Worcester Opening Day roster in 2024 in their bullpen.
