Zack Weiss on his promotion to the Red Sox: ‘I’m very excited to be here’
Red Sox reliever Zack Weiss made his team debut on Sept. 9 against the Orioles. He lasted two innings surrendering two hits and two runs both home runs with two strikeouts.
The 31-year-old journeyman isn’t taking his opportunity with the Red Sox for granted.
Weiss made his big league debut for the Reds on April 12, 2018, then didn’t pitch again in the big leagues until Sept. 2, 2022.
In the time between his two big league appearances, Weiss spent time pitching for three different independent ball teams.
“Gratifying,” said Weiss, who was recalled from Triple-A Worcester during the Orioles series. “It’s been a lot of work. It’s been a lot of ugly years and some grindy situations. I tried to keep my head down, tried to understand who I was as a player and continue to improve. Tried to get really good at a few things I can control. I think maybe when I was younger, I let a few too many things get in my way. It’s been good. The last year and a half, two years or so have been fun. Just enjoy it. It’s a gratifying journey I’ll say. To end up in the Red Sox home locker room is obviously a very cool feeling.”
He has appeared in four games for the WooSox without allowing a run in 4 innings. He has given up two hits and two walks while striking out six.
“I’m very excited to be here,” Weiss said. “Didn’t expect to end up in Boston as a Red Sox this year. But obviously the opportunity to come to play for such a storied franchise still in the hunt is super exciting. Very happy to be here and happy to contribute however I can.”
