Zack Weiss off to good start in Red Sox organization
When right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels after his outing on August 19th, the Red Sox claimed him and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.
Weiss has hit the ground running ever since.
The 31-year-old has appeared in four games now for Worcester and has not allowed a run. Over the four innings of scoreless work, Weiss has only allowed two hits and has struck out six batters. Over that span, the right-hander is holding opponents to a .125 batting average.
Weiss is one of six WooSox pitchers currently on the 40-man roster, four of which are in the bullpen. The Red Sox have plenty of depth options to choose from between Justin Garza, Nick Robertson, Logan Gillaspie, Kyle Barraclough, Chris Murphy, and Weiss. Murphy figures to be at the top of that depth chart and your guess is as good as mine for who number two would be on that list.
With 19 games of MLB experience, the California native can bring some valuable experience if the Red Sox need any extra bullpen help down the stretch. Weiss pitched in 6 games for the Angels this season and had a 5.06 ERA. In those 19 games at the MLB level, he carries an impressive 12.1 K/9. He could also just simply be needed bullpen depth for Worcester as they head towards a playoff battle of their own.
