Chris Murphy continues good run out of bullpen in Worcester
If you took a look at Chris Murphy’s Triple-A ERA, you would be misled. It will show you a 6.06 ERA and will not paint you the complete picture.
Murphy started the year in the WooSox starting rotation and struggled mightily. In 9 starts at the beginning of the season, the lefty put up a 1-3 record with a 8.35 ERA while walking 25 batters over 36 innings. Nothing was really working on the mound for the 25-year-old and the Red Sox made the right choice to have him come out of the bullpen.
Portland reliever Christopher Troye putting up impressive strikeout numbers in 2023
If you aren’t following Portland Sea Dogs reliever Christopher Troye on social media, you are missing out. While his social media game is A+, his 2023 season has been going the same exact way on the mound. After being selected in the 12th round of the 2021 Draft and spending all of 2022 in Salem, Troye started the 2023 season in…
After appearing in 14 games in the majors, Murphy is now back with the WooSox in a bullpen bulk-inning role. As a reliver between the MLB and Triple-A, Murphy is 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA over 58 innings pitched. He has also been punching guys out at a higher clip as he finished the month of August with a 10.0 K/9 for the month. We are seeing more of the same in September, as he has thrown 8.1 innings so far and is carrying a 1.08 ERA alongside a 13.0 K/9. He has only given up one earned run over the two outings.
Murphy finds himself in an interesting spot with the Red Sox. With the left-handed pitching depth on the 40-man roster deep with Brennan Bernardino, Joe Jacques, Brandon Walter, and Murphy all spending time in the Red Sox bullpen, someone ends up being the odd man out to be sent back down to Worcester. Murphy is that guy right now, but he could easily flip flop with Walter and be back up in the mix.
