During the 2023 season, the Red Sox minor league system has provided plenty of excitement for what the future holds. Ceddanne Rafaela has been a walking highlight reel, and Roman Anthony has seen his stock skyrocket. However, another prospect in Yoeilin Cespedes has started to make a name for himself.
The talented shortstop was given the largest signing bonus in Boston’s 2023 international draft class and has been a hits machine. In the first 46 games of his professional career, Cespedes has posted a .346 batting average while driving in 38 runs. In Rookie Ball, the Dominican native is also showing some power with 25 extra-base hits.
Due to his plate approach, the 18-year-old has not had any issues adjusting to a new league. He isn’t overly aggressive, and he uses the whole field. He is making hard contact and has the potential to average more than 20 homers a season in the majors.
While Cespedes has spent most of his time at short, that could change as he moves through the system. According to MLB Pipeline, Scouts believe he is destined for second or third base. Cespedes has average speed and arm strength but may not have enough range for short in the upper levels. In 294 innings of work in the field, he has committed seven errors and turned 14 double plays.
Regardless of the position, the international signee has shown he can be a force at the plate. If that continues, the Red Sox will have no problem finding a spot for him in the lineup. His MLB debut isn’t projected to come until 2028, but his future is bright as MLB Pipeline has ranked Cespedes as the Red Sox’s 13th-best prospect.

Just out of principle I would not trust any baseball player who has the last name of Cespedes with a contract that exceeds the minimum salary.
What he said. Anthony Romano is just plain embarrassing.
