The Yankees and Dodgers finally completed a three-player swap on Monday morning. New York will trade infield prospect Trey Sweeney to Los Angeles for left-handed reliever Victor Gonzalez and infield prospect Jorbit Vivas.
The deal between the two clubs was first reported as being in the works on Sunday afternoon, by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
The deal helps the Dodgers clear two 40-man roster spots and will officially make room to add Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani and reliever Joe Kelly.
Ohtani and the Dodgers agreed to a massive 10-year, $700 million deal with Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon.
Gonzalez helps fill a void in the Yankees’ bullpen by the presumed departure of Wandy Peralta who is a free agent. General manager Brian Cashman has reportedly remained in contact with Peralta on a possible reunion.
In 33 2/3 frames this past season, González posted a 4.01 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP while holding opponents to a .223/.296/.331 slash line. The southpaw held opposing batters scoreless in 27 out of 34 appearances after missing all of 2022 while recovering from elbow surgery.
Vivas becomes the Yankees No. 10 prospect in their system, according to MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old infielder has played both second base and third base in the minors. Vivas batted .269 with 13 homers, 25 steals and a .788 OPS over 135 games between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2023.
Sweeney will head to Hollywood as the Dodgers’ No. 18 prospect. The 23-year-old played all of last season with Double-A Somerset. He batted .252 with 13 homers, 20 steals and a .778 OPS in 100 games.
