Nicholas Judice brings intriguing upside to the Red Sox system
Less than two weeks ago, Craig Breslow began to reshape the Red Sox’s roster when he traded Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees. The trade netted Boston three pitchers, including Nicholas Judice. The 22-year-old has yet to make his professional debut, but he has an exciting arsenal that drew Breslow’s interest.
After four years at the University of Louisiana Monroe, Judice’s pro career began this past summer when the Yankees selected him in the eighth round of the 2023 MLB Draft. In 59 games as a Warhawk, Judice posted a 5.51 ERA and struck out 134 batters. While his ERA was high, he shined during his senior season.
The talented righty posted a career-low 3.74 ERA in 21 games. Judice also showed he could handle a higher workload as he set a new career high in innings pitched with 53. Before the 2023 campaign, his highest workload was 39.1 innings. That helped increase his draft stock.
While the Baton Rouge native still has plenty to work on, he has intriguing stuff he needs to learn to control. Judice’s fastball reportedly tops out at 97 mph and his slider was problematic for opposing hitters in college. He is also an imposing presence on the mound due to his 6-foot-8 frame. If he can limit hard contact, he could be a very useful bullpen piece in the majors.
With the start of the 2024 campaign quickly approaching, Judice is not ranked as one of the Red Sox’s top prospects. That could change once he makes his minor league debut.
Additionally, during his collegiate career, Judice showed that he can miss bats. He also thrived in high-leverage situations, recording three saves, including two as a senior.
