The New York Yankees began the 2023 season with the the second-highest payroll in baseball at $275 million and will likely end the season in the basement of the AL East.
General manager Brian Cashman proclaimed the 2023 season as “a disaster” and “an embarrassment” on Wednesday. The Yankees are coming off a nine-game losing streak, the longest in a century will evaluate the jobs of both Cashman and skipper Aaron Boone.
"It's been a disaster this season. Yes, definitely a shock," Cashman said during pregame news conference Wednesday. "We're embarrassed by it."
New York snapped their losing skid by defeating the Nationals on Wednesday 9-1. Superstar Aaron Judge was the main reason for the victory, homering three times in the contest.
"We're really obviously disappointed, frustrated, angered," Cashman said. "And that's representative from every aspect of this franchise from top to bottom. And that includes our players, too. They care. They're fighting. I know it doesn't look like that, but I would say if you try to put yourself in their position, I don't think anybody wants to go out in front of 40,000 people and lay an egg, whether it's individually or collectively as a team, because then what comes with that is pretty horrific."
New York is 9½ games back for the AL's third and final wild card, also trailing the Blue Jays, Red Sox and Angels.
Cashman has been the Yankees general manager since 1998 and is currently under a four-year contract he signed back in December. Boone has one more season in a three-year pact he signed with a team option for the 2025 season.
"I think we're all going to be evaluated, including myself," Cashman said.
The Yankees roster is bloated with high salaries and aging players and a lineup that 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Tony Massarotti called a “trick or treat” lineup.
Giancarlo Stanton is under contract through 2027 and has a club option for 2028 , he has a full no trade clause in his deal. He will account for $88 million dollars against the luxury tax through the remainder of his deal, not counting his club option, per Spotrac.
Carlos Rodon has been a bust dealing with injuries all season long ($27 million), Anthony Rizzo will be 34 next season ($17 million), Josh Donaldson will be 38 ($6 million), D.J. LeMahieu will be 35 ($17 million).
The Yankees are in desperate need of a youth infusion to their roster and will need to be creative to move some of the bloated salaries on the roster.
Time will only tell if Cashman and Boone will be the duo to lead the Yankees in 2024. One thing is for certain, if George Steinbrenner were still alive, he would not tolerate the ineptitude that is the current New York Yankees, heads would roll in the Bronx.

My 2 favorite teams since 1994 are the Boston Red Sox in spite of their current state and whoever is playing the NYyankees. The Sox salvaged a split with the Astros but they still are not going to make the playoffs again. If the Tool from Tampa does anything with Alex Cora other than giving him a raise/extension I will have to reevaluate my options as to who I root for. Sam needs to get in JH’s ear and get rid of the Tampa Tool. In the last 23 years there have been 2 managers who knew what they were doing one is AC and the other is Tito. What did they have in common? Tito had Theo a bonafide baseball man and AC had Dave in 2018 another bonafide baseball man. I’d really like to know why JH decided to fire Dave and then hire the non baseball guy the TampaTool. For 19 years he had baseball men run his baseball team and all was good in BeanTown, JH did someone hit you in the head with a soccer ball? The baseball talent that Tampa has gotten rid of since he’s been in charge would field a team that would beat the current Sox 3 out of every 4 games. The 2023 regular season ends on October 1 for the baseball gods to shine on our beloved RedSox Chaim needs to be an ex employee of the Boston Red Sox on October 2, 2023.
