Adam Duvall’s three-run home run in extra innings lifts Red Sox over the Astros, 7-5
The Red Sox were in desperate need of winning Wednesday night’s game against the Astros. To label the game a must win was an understatement, but the Sox chipped away all night at the Astros pitching staff and ultimately Adam Duvall’s 10th inning three-run blast lifted the them to victory.
With runners on first and second in the top of the 10th inning, Duvall smashed a 2-and-2 sinker off reliever Kendall Graveman over the left field wall.
Earlier in the at-bat, Duvall drilled a sinker off his foot, causing the slugger to appear to be in noticeable pain.
“I’m not going to take my shoe off tonight, because It squared me up,” Duvall said on NESN after the game. “He was throwing turbo sinkers in there, and so you’ve got to think after fouling one off my foot — as an ego pitch — he’s going to try and go back in there. I was looking for it in there and got it.”
Duvall has hit three homers in the last three games against the Astros.
Prior to the start of the series, the Sox center fielder was struggling in the month of August batting just .189 with six RBI. The 34-year-old has flipped the switch quickly, just when his team needed it the most.
“He’s made some adjustments and he’s catching up with the fastball and he’s pulling the ball,” said Alex Cora postgame. “And I think he mentioned that a few weeks ago that he was missing that and so far here he’s put three great swings and that was huge for us tonight.”
Over the last five games, which includes the three in Houston, Duvall is mashing, hitting .391 with three homers, two doubles and seven RBI with a .870 slugging percentage.
