Xander Bogaerts misplaces wallet before dinner and then goes hitless in first game against the Red Sox
Bogaerts went 0-for-4 in his first game against his former team
The night before the Red Sox and Padres began a three game series in San Diego, former longtime short stop Xander Bogaerts went to dinner with his close friend Rafael Devers.
Not only did Devers enjoy a great dinner with Bogaerts, he also feasted on Padres left-hander Blake Snell. Devers went 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs in the Sox 6-1 win.
Bogaerts on the other hand forgot his wallet resulting in Devers paying the tab. The All-Star short stop told reporters on Friday he lost his wallet, he also misplaced his bats, as the All-Star went hitless in his first game against the Red Sox.
“I’m not even kidding,” Bogaerts said. “I came to the ballpark (Thursday on the off day). I thought I left it here. I haven’t seen my wallet in a couple of days and yeah, I came here and it wasn’t here. That’s when I kind of started getting a little nervous because I didn’t know, maybe it fell out or something somewhere. I remember I saw him, I said, ‘Listen, man, you’ve got to pick this up because I don’t even have a dollar, not even if I parked at a meter. I have nothing on me.’”
Bogaerts finished the game 0-for-4 with one strikeout and is now hitting under .200 for the month of May. Alex Verdugo robbed Bogaerts of what would have been extra bases in the fifth inning. Verdugo stretched out and made a great diving play to get his former teammate out.
Devers enjoyed a big night and in the process is enjoying the few days he’s getting to spend time and see Bogaerts.
“I was looking forward to this day to get the chance to see him,” Devers said. “It was really nice to get to see him these past (two) days.”
Bogaerts has been one of the Padres most consistent hitters this season and will likely collect a couple of hits in the series. Despite his performance at the plate in the series opener, Bogaerts is happy to see that Devers is growing up and said he’s the “perfect person” to lead the Red Sox.
“It makes me very happy to hear that he says those things about me,” Devers said. “Even more because we’re such good friends. It means a lot to me when those words come out of his mouth because we know what he represented for this organization and what he means for me. So it’s very nice.”
