WooSox place infielder/outfielder Ryan Fitzgerald on the 7-day injured list
The WooSox will place infielder/outfielder Ryan Fitzgerald on the 7-day injured list with right wrist inflammation.
He becomes the second position player to land on the IL on Wednesday. The team announced Christian Arroyo was placed on the IL with right ankle inflammation.
Fitzgerald has had a good year at the plate for the WooSox. The super utilityman hitting .268 with 84 hits, 24 doubles, six triples, 12 homers, 56 RBI, nine stolen bases and an .830 OPS.
The 29-year-old has played all over the diamond, making his versatility attractive to the parent club. However, despite his strong season, Fitzgerald has not yet been given an opportunity to make his Major League debut.
Fitzgerald is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter, his final season under Red Sox control.
Last season, the Creighton-alum played through injuries, including a broken foot.
“I broke my foot last year,” Fitzgerald told MassLive. “I played with a broken foot and I shouldn’t have.”
He attempted to play through the injury with the hopes of a potential call up.
“That opportunity of going up (to the majors last year), I thought it was there but it never really was,” Fitzgerald said. “I don’t really know if it is this year either. I think it would take a lot of injuries to get there but you never know. But yeah, I thought maybe if I played through my injury that I’d still have the opportunity to get called up. And I shouldn’t have done that but I did.”
The WooSox have added outfielder Corey Rosier to the roster with both Arroyo and Fitzgerald on the IL.
