WooSox infielder meets the Red Sox in Baltimore for series finale; team awaits Tyler O'Neill test results
The Red Sox are placing infielder Enmanuel Valdez on the taxi squad ahead of the series finale with the Orioles on Wednesday night.
The need for Valdez comes on the heels of Tyler O’Neill flying back to Boston to have an MRI done on his sore right knee.
“We feel like he should be fine,” Alex Cora said after the Red Sox 8-3 win over the Orioles. “But we want to make sure. [The medical team] feels like he’s not making strides and he’s not feeling better. But they feel like he should be OK. Nothing too serious and we’ll go from there.”
It’s not yet known if Valdez will be activated prior to the start of the game. Boston is waiting on the results of the tests before making a final decision.
Valdez has been with the WooSox since May 2, after being demoted in order for the club to make room for Vaughn Grissom. While with the Red Sox to open the season, Valdez hit .156 (14-for-90) with two homers and 11 RBI.
In 20 games since being sent to Triple-A Worcester four weeks ago, Valdez has hit .230 with six homers, 10 RBIs, and an .887 OPS. He’s also played first base, second base, and third base. The Red Sox are having the 25-year-old play multiple positions to open up a clearer path to the big leagues.
O'Neill came out of Saturday's game versus the Brewers and has missed the last four games. The slugger has struggled at the plate in the month of May, hitting .151 and striking out 36 times.
