Michael Sansone off to good start in Red Sox organization for Salem
The Boston Red Sox made a flurry of minor league pitching signings during the offseason that were labeled as low risk, high reward additions.
The acquisitions ranged from INDY league arms to undrafted free agents who spent a year away from baseball and are spread out across Low-A Salem and High-A Greenville. One in particular, Michael Sansone, is proving to be a worth while addition to the organization.
Sansone is a left-handed pitcher who signed with Boston after pitching two years in the Rays system before being signed by the Yolo High Wheelers of the INDY league in March of 2024. He wouldn’t last too long on an INDY ball roster as the Red Sox purchased his contract in April before the season even started.
The 24-year-old has been lights out over 5 games for the Salem Red Sox this season. He has gone 3-0 over 17 innings pitched with a 1.06 ERA. He has allowed just 2 earned runs this season and only 3 walks allowed. He has struck out 20 batters in that span and hitters are only hitting .190 off of him. He is getting both sides of the plate out as well as both right-handers and left-handers are hitting below .200.
Given his age, it would not be a huge surprise to see a quick promotion to Greenville to see how he handles better hitting. It’s worth noting that all five of his outings have been at least three innings pitched, with one outing being for four innings. Sansone can provide much needed depth out of the bullpen in Greenville while being challenged more at a higher level. Greenville also has it’s fair share of injuries with David Sandlin, Yordanny Monegro, and Bryce Bonnin on the IL at the moment. Monegro is slotted to return soon as he has been rehabbing in the FCL.
It isn’t a huge surprise to see Sansone off to a good start in the system, as over his three year minor league career, he carries a 2.39 ERA over 49 professional innings pitched. The left-hander is just another example of a solid INDY ball find by the Red Sox front office.
