Will Grier getting ready for the Giants on Sunday, ‘If I get the opportunity, I’m just going to go play and win’
Patriots quarterback Will Grier wants an opportunity to show what he can do for head coach Bill Belichick. The third-string backup has been with New England since late September and told reporters in Foxboro he is ready to play against the Giants.
“Whether you’re comfortable or not, you get called on, you’ve got to go play and figure out a way to win,” Grier said to reporters on Tuesday. “So that’s the mentality for me. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Injuries happen. You’ve it around the league, a lot of guys have had to step up and play. If I’ve got to step up and play, I’ll be ready to go.”
Patriots’ JC Jackson on why he was punished by Bill Belichick, calls the situation a 'reality check'
New England has not yet announced a starter Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium. Belichick told reporters during his press conference with the media that Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe, Malik Cunningham and Grier are all “ready to go.”
Grier told reporters that he is getting reps in practice with the scout team and is continuing to learn everyday. He also mentioned Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs and his path as a starter in the NFL this season.
The fourth-round pick in 2017 is well-traveled in the league and had a tryout with the Patriots last season but never signed. Dobbs is now keeping the Vikings afloat in the NFC with Kirk Cousins out for the season.
“You’ve seen guys around the league like Josh Dobbs,” said Grier, who hasn’t seen regular-season game action since his rookie year. “It’s awesome to see what he did, man. At the end of the day, you’ve just got to play ball. And he’s obviously a testament to that theory that I believe in wholeheartedly.
“If I get the opportunity, I’m just going to go play and win.”
Grier wouldn’t indicate whether he took first team reps, but remained confident in his remarks to the media on if he number is called on Sunday.
“I’d rather let Bill or somebody else tell you how starter reps are divvied up” - but indicated he would be fine being on the same page with his receivers should it come to that.
“Good enough,” said Grier. “I think I could win for us if I got the opportunity.”
